Formula 1 – What You Need To Know

Formula 1 is regulated by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and, although the championship officially began between the 1940s and 50s as The World Drivers’ Championship, its roots pre-date that. The first few races played under the European Championship between the 1920s and 1930s, but they were forced to stop due to the Second World War. Sometime between the 1940s and 50s, Formula One was established with a strict set of rules, and the Turin Grand Prix, the first-ever Formula One Grand Prix event, was held and was won by Italian driver Giuseppe Farina. Subsequent championships were won by Argentinian driver Juan Manuel Fangio, who held the record for winning five World Championship titles for 45 years, and in 1981, the World Drivers’ Championship became the FIA Formula One World Championship.

The competition and its teams earned a lot of money through sponsorships and television rights. The latter became an issue, however, leading the FIA, Formula One teams, and the Formula One group to sign the F1 Concorde Agreement in 1981, a contract dictating how television revenue is split amongst each of the firms. Since then, seven other Concorde Agreements have been signed in 1987, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2009, 2013, and most recently in 2021.

Formula One Racing

The event takes place each year and is comprised of a series of races known as a Grand Prix that takes place on closed public roads or purpose-built circuits. A collection of Grands Prix is referred to as a Formula One season, where the word “Formula” refers to a set of rules that teams must adhere to. Drivers participating in the event are required to hold a Super License issued by the FIA. Throughout the competition, the performance of drivers and car constructors are evaluated with a points-based system, and the FIA aggregates all scores and determines two winners at the end of each championship; a driver and a constructor.

A Formula One Grand Prix is held over a weekend, with the main event taking place on a Sunday. Fridays are traditionally used for practice sessions or Thursdays if the event is taking place in Monaco. Qualifying sessions, three sessions where drivers set the fastest lap time to determine their starting place, take place on the Saturday.

Formula One Grand Prix races are comprised of two races, a warm-up where drivers can check the condition of their cars and the main race. When it comes to the main race, drivers are required to start in their designated places according to the qualifying sessions, and five red lights will be lit at intervals. A Grand Prix race begins when all lights have been extinguished simultaneously, but if a car stalls, the countdown is restarted.

The winner of the race is whichever driver crosses the finish line after having completed a series of laps across the circuit. Races cannot exceed two hours, but they usually finish before the two-hour period.

Formula One Flags

Like other motorsports races, Formula One uses a system of coloured flags and lights to inform drivers of hazards and other information throughout a race. The most common flags seen during races include:

  • Yellow: A plain yellow flag informs drivers that overtaking an opponent is dangerous. A single wave means danger on the track, and a double wave means there’s a blocked track. Drivers are required to reduce their speed when the flag is waved.
  • Safety Car: This flag informs drivers that the Safety Car has been put on the track, usually due to a block on the track or due to debris. The yellow flag is usually waved after this, and drivers are required to wait until the hazard has been cleared.
  • Yellow And Red: A yellow and red striped flag indicates a slippery track due to oil, water or lose debris. When rocked side-to-side, the flag indicates that an animal is on the track.
  • Green: A plain green flag indicates normal racing conditions and is usually waved at the beginning of a race and after a yellow flag to inform drivers that a hazard has been cleared.
  • Blue: A plain blue flag informs the driver in front who is one or more laps down that they must allow faster cards to pass. Drivers who ignore three consecutive blue flags are issued a penalty.
  • White: A plain white flag informs drivers that a slow-moving vehicle is ahead or that a medical car or ambulance is on the track.
  • Red: A plain red flag informs drivers that the current session has been suspended or stopped due to bad weather or danger.
  • Black: A plain black flag signifies that a driver has been disqualified from a race. A black flag is followed by a drivers race number.
  • Black With Orange Circle: A black flag with an orange circle informs drivers that a car is damaged or that a driver has encountered a mechanical problem. Like the plain black flag, this flag is followed by the driver’s race number.
  • Half Black And Half White: A half white and half black flag acts as a warning to a driver for bad behaviour. This can be followed by a black flag and the driver’s race number for repeat offences.
  • Chequered: A chequered flag indicates that the current session has completed and has ended. Once waved, drivers are allowed to complete their current lap but cannot start new ones.

When competing, drivers are required to keep track of all flags when racing to prevent accidents and penalties.

Popular Formula One Drivers

Since Formula One has been on for several decades, there have been numerous players that have become famous and popular for their skills. While many of these are no longer taking part in the sport, some still are.

  • Lewis Hamilton: Started his Formula One career in 2007 and was the youngest Formula One World Champion, a record that has since gone to another driver. Hamilton now currently holds a joint record of seven World Drivers’ Championship titles with Michael Schumacher and holds records for the most wins, points, consecutive race starts, highest average points per race started, pole positions, and podium finishes.
  • Juan Manuel Fangio: Started his Formula One career back in 1950 and won the World Championship of Drivers five times, a record he held for 46 years until he was beaten by Michael Schumacher. His last Formula One race was the 1958 French Grand Prix, which he lost. Fangio passed away in 1995 but remains the only Argentinean to have won the Argentine Grand Prix of which he has won four times.
  • Michael Schumacher: Started his Formula One career back in 1991 and retired in 2012. Schumacher currently holds a joint record of seven World Drivers’ Championship titles with Lewis Hamilton, and he, along with his brother Ralf, are the only siblings to have won Formula 1 races and the first siblings to finish in the first two places in the same race.
  • Niki Lauda: Started his Formula One career back in 1971 and went on to win three World Drivers’ Championship titles before retiring in 1985. Lauda is recognised for being the only champion in history for both Ferrari and McLaren. Lauda passed away in 2019.
  • Ayrton Senna: Started his Formula One career back in 1984, where he went on to win three World Drivers’ Championship titles as well as 41 Grand Prix races. Senna, who died in an accident during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, was recognised for his performance in wet weather but sparked controversy with his rivalry with Alain Prost.
  • Sir Jackie Stewart: Started his Formula One career back in 1965. Nicknamed the “Flying Scot”, Stewart won three World Drivers’ Championship titles and throughout his career campaigned to improve the safety of motor racing.
  • Sebastian Vettel: Started his Formula One career in 2007 and has so far won four World Drivers’ Championship titles. He currently holds the record for the youngest Formula One World Champion, beating out previous record-holder Lewis Hamilton.
  • Sir Stirling Moss: Started his Formula One career in 1951, and despite winning over 200 races and finishing as runner-up or in third place for many events, Moss has never won a World Championship. He died in April 2020.
  • Kimi Räikkönen: Started his Formula One career in 2001 and has since won one World Championship title. Despite this, Räikkönen is one of the most successful Finnish Formula One drivers, having won 21 Grand Prix.
  • Fernando Alonso: Started his Formula One career in 2001 and has won two World Drivers’ Championship titles. Alonso has since retired but remains the only Spanish Formula One driver to have won a Grand Prix and World Championship title.

There are hundreds of other Formula One drivers, but the drivers we’ve listed above are some of the most popular and well-known. They’ve all won numerous races and hold records, making them to best to watch out for in current and upcoming events.

F1 Cars

All of the cars used in Formula One championships are created by constructors. Each championship features numerous constructors, some more than others, and these constructors can win a World Constructors’ Champion title for accumulating the most points over an event. The most famous constructors include Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren, along with Lotus, Renault, and more.

The 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix includes constructors Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull, Alfa Romeo, AlphaTauri, Alpine, Aston Martin, and Haas. Of those constructors, Ferrari is the most successful, having won 16 World Constructors’ Championship titles. This is followed by Williams with nine titles, McLaren with eight titles, Mercedes with seven titles, and Red Bull with four titles.

How F1 Championship Betting Works

F1 Championship betting works similar to betting on all other sports. You simply have to find a sports betting website that interests you and offers F1 Championship betting and register with it. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to verify your account by supplying the website with copies of documents, including your passport or driver’s license and a recent utility bill. Only after you’ve done this will you be able to place bets on F1 Championship races.

Now, it’s important to note that the betting options available for you will depend on the betting site you’ve registered with. So it’s a good idea to check what wagers are available before you register and share your personal details with the website.

Formula 1 Bets

When it comes to placing Formula 1 bets, there is a range of wagers available. It’s important you read up on what these wagers require of you before placing them, so you can boost your chance at winning them. The most common Formula 1 bets are:

  • Outright Winner: Betting on the winner of a specific Grand Prix, whether that’s a driver, team or constructor. You’ll be given various odds for different drivers and will need to predict and bet on which you think will win.
  • Outright Finishing Position: Another popular outright bet where you predict whether a driver will end up in the top three positions.
  • Long-term Winner: Betting on which driver, team or constructor you believe will win the championship. Since this is a long-term bet, the odds for each driver, team or constructor will continuously change depending on their performance.
  • Driver Vs Driver: Betting on which one driver of two will finish higher in a Grand Prix.
  • Fastest Lap: Betting on which driver or team will complete the quicker lap within a race.
  • Safety Car: Betting on whether a safety car will appear during a Grand Prix.
  • Proposition Bets: Betting on whether something will or will not happen during a race. These bets usually allow you to place alternative bets, which are usually not available.
  • Qualifying Bets: Betting on the qualifiers ahead of a Grand Prix.
  • Live Bets: Betting on a Grand Prix as it’s playing. Like with long-term bets, the odds for live betting are always fluctuating, and you’ll be required to think on your feet to successfully win.

Again, we have to stress that the wagers available for you to bet on will differ between gambling websites. This is why it’s a good idea to potentially register with more than one website and check which sites offer you the bets you want to wager on and the best odds.

Formula 1 Betting Odds

Speaking about odds, working out the Formula 1 betting odds of certain wagers can appear confusing, particularly if you’re new to sports betting, but it doesn’t need to be. When it comes to online betting, there are three ways betting odds are presented; decimals, fractions or the American style. Fractions are usually the most common form of betting odds followed by decimals, and both have different methods of calculating odds.

Fractional odds are simple to work out. For example, an odd of 4/5 states that for every £5 you wager, you earn £4. Decimal bets are slightly more complicated and require you to divide the odd by your stake and deduct the total from your wager. Our betting sites guide details the three main types of betting odds and how you can calculate them in more information.

How To Ensure Betting Sites Are Safe?

If you’re new to online betting, it’s natural to feel a little worried or concerned regarding the safety and security of an online betting website. Thanks to the UK Gambling Commission, however, it’s completely safe to play. The UK Gambling Commission, or UKGC, is responsible for regulating brick-and-mortar and online gambling, including sports betting.

Websites looking to operate in the UK must hold a license from the UKGC, credited only once operators have met the regulator’s strict rules and licensing conditions created to ensure you’re kept safe and offered safe content. What’s more, websites with UKGC licenses generally partner with gambling charities and services that allow you to self-exclude yourself from gambling websites. Finally, gambling websites licensed by the UKGC generally use the latest technology to ensure your personal and financial information are kept safe and secure.

In short, there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to playing at a betting website as long as the sportsbook is licensed by the UK. All of the websites we’ve suggested here on Casinostoplay.com are licensed by the UK, so you don’t have to worry about safety, just concentrate on finding a sportsbook that meets your needs.

Other Motor Racing Betting

Formula One is a type of motorsports, a term that is used to describe sports that involve motor vehicles. There are other major motorsports competitions that are just as popular as Formula One, and they include:

  • Formula E: Founded in 2011, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is similar to Formula One, but uses electric cars.
  • IndyCar Series: Founded in 1909, the IndyCar Series is a championship that takes place across America and Canada, with the main event being the Indianapolis 500.
  • NASCAR: There are also several NASCAR events, including the NASCAR Cup Series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and many more.

All of the above events can be wagered on. However, what’s available will generally depend on the betting site you’re registered with and the time of year as races will vary.

In addition to the above, there’s another form of motorsports racing you can bet on; virtual motorsports. Virtual sports has grown considerably more popular in recent years, particularly in racing, as they allow users to bet on events at any time. Virtual motor racing, like all other virtual sports, are fast-paced and take place every two minutes, lasting only a short amount of time. These virtual sports games also feature lifelike visuals and sound effects to provide a highly immersive experience 24-hours-a-day. A majority of online betting sites now offer virtual motor racing and other sports, but you may still encounter some websites that don’t. More information on virtual sports can be found in our guide on all virtual sports.

F1 Betting Tips

Regardless of whether you’re new or not to F1 betting, it can still be challenging correctly predicting your F1 bets. To help you, we’ve compiled a list of F1 betting tips that we think may help you when it comes to placing and (hopefully) winning your bets. Check them out below:

#1: Check For The Best Odds

One of the best things you can do when it comes to F1 betting is to check for the best possible odds. F1 betting odds vary between websites, which is why it’s important to check different betting websites for the best odds. Some websites also offer odds-based promotions, helping to ensure you make the best possible win if you’re lucky enough.

#2: Research Drivers

Before placing a bet, check which drivers are going to be taking part in a race and carefully research their skills, abilities, and previous win records. You should then be able to apply your research to your bet by selecting which driver you think is more likely to win and potentially improve your chance at winning.

#3: Check The Weather

It’s also a good idea to check the weather before a race as it can drastically change the outcome of a Grand Prix. Some drivers are famous for their performance in the rain while others struggle. Checking the weather and using your research on drivers, you should be able to accurately predict which drivers will finish on rainy and stormy days.

#4: Follow The Qualifiers

Following the qualifiers before the main event is a great way of checking how drivers are performing. Although you shouldn’t completely base your bets on how drivers perform in the qualifiers since things can change, you should follow them to gauge how players are performing and how things may go on the day.

#5: Enjoy The Sport!

One of the most important things you can do, if not the most important, is to remember to enjoy the sport. The thrill of winning money on a Formula One game can be great, but the main reason you’re betting is due to your passion and love for the sport, so remember that when gambling and just enjoy yourself.

Although you won’t guarantee yourself a win by following the above Formula One betting tips, they may help improve your chances of winning and keep the sport and betting on the sport more fun.
